The profile which will be applied to the current request to decide whether
it will be passed on to the user or blocked.
bandwidth
An electronic term which determines the total amount of data that can be
transmitted over your Internet connection at one time. If Internet data
were drops of water, bandwidth would be analogous to the diameter of your
water pipes.
blacklist
A profile configuration which is designed to reject specific web pages,
while accepting all other web pages by default. Filters in a "blacklist"
profile usually are set to reject web pages if they match certain URL patterns
or their labels pass certain tests. The default filter for a blacklist
profile is set to accept all other requested URLs.
blocked
WebDoubler prevents the content of a blocked web page from being transmitted
to the requesting browser; instead, a "no-access" page is returned which
informs the user that they have been denied access to the page, and may
optionally include an explanation why they are denied access.
default filter
The last filter checked in any profile; it determines whether a requested
URL should be passed or blocked if it satisfies none of the profile's other
filters.
embedded label
A PICS label that is sent as part of the requested web page, usually in
a tag between the and tags in an HTML file. Labels are either embedded
or fetched from a label bureau.
filter
A set of data which is used to determine whether a web page is to be passed
or blocked. When WebDoubler applies any filter to any requested URL, one
of three results are generated: the page is blocked, the page is passed,
or the filter is not satisfied. There are two types of filters: URL filters
and label filters.
label
Specially-formatted, machine-readable text that provides a rating for a
web page using a particular rating system. A label is used by label filters
to determine whether the web page is to be passed or blocked by WebDoubler.
label bureau
A special web server which returns labels for any URL in response to a
label bureau query sent by WebDoubler.
label filter
A type of filter which uses labels to determine whether a URL will be passed
or blocked.
passed
A web page requested via WebDoubler is returned to the client browser
in its original, unmodified form.
PICS
Acronym; stands for Platform for Internet Content Selection. Defines syntax
and standards for labels, RAT files, and profiles so that any PICS-compatible
software can share labels, RAT files, and profiles generated by any other
PICS-compatible program.
profile
A collection of filters and rating service descriptions which tells Web
Doubler how to determine whether each requested URL should be passed or
blocked.
RAT File
A text file with a filename suffix of ".rat", which contains a description
of a rating system. A PICS rating service must define a RAT file to be
useable with WebDoubler. WebDoubler stores RAT files in a folder named
"Rating systems" within the "PICS" folder in the WebDoubler folder.
rating service
An organization or company that defines and maintains a rating system for
use with PICS-compatible software. A profile contains references to one
or more rating services. The services referenced by a profile can be used
in label filters contained in that profile.
rating system
A set of categories and category values which classify the information
contained in any Internet-accessible resource (such as a web page). Label
filters use a particular rating system to decide whether web pages should
be passed or blocked.
rejected
See "blocked".
satisfied
A label filter is satisfied when a requested URL meets the criteria defined
by the filter. When a label filter is satisfied, it is used to determine
whether the requested URL is passed or blocked. When a label filter is
not satisfied, it is not used to determine the outcome of the request.
service
See "rating service".
URL
A text string which uniquely identifies any Internet-accessible resource,
including web pages, downloadable files, email addresses, programs, etc.
A URL is used to retrieve files via HTTP or FTP protocols.
URL filter
A type of filter which uses the requested URL to determine whether it should
be passed or blocked.
whitelist
A profile configuration which is designed to accept specific web pages,
while rejecting all other web pages by default. Filters in a "whitelist"
profile usually are set to accept web pages if they match certain URL patterns
or their labels pass certain tests. The default filter for a whitelist
profile is set to reject all other requested URLs.
